Is that really ME giving a confident presentation?

Are there actually more people in the world who are afraid of speaking in front of others than in dying? Yes, 54% of adults are more afraid of public speaking than death! What are we afraid of? Messing up? Being rejected? Feeling foolish? Unsure if our audience will think we don't know what we are talking about? Have your normally dry palms become so sweaty you couldn't even hold onto a football? When you speak, does that upper lip suddenly get stuck to your front teeth? Do you feel like you just swallowed a large walnut? We will be exploring the mental and physical aspects of speaking in front of others in the next few blogs.

Hope is not a Sales Strategy

A client cancelled this week, a day before our start date, so I have too much free time and an empty work funnel. I am frustrated, because I did not plan for this delay of work. I, like many other business owners, was not ready for the unexpected. I kept hoping a past client or referral would call with a small project to fill the void. However, we are behind on our sales calls. Hope alone is not a good sales strategy.

Sales Results on a Budget

Take a Trip to Community Businesses for a Merry Season of Shopping ... There’s Convenience and Customer Service Right In Your Neighborhood

Surprise your friends and family with unique gifts.  How about some of these ideas?

Gifts of food, such as fruit baskets, deli trays, fresh or frozen meat specialties, always seem to be appreciated.  You could hide a gift certificate to your local grocery store in the basket or on the tray.

Call on your neighborhood caterers for baked goods and sweets for holiday gatherings and gifts.  Perhaps a gift certificate for a pie a month would be fun to give.

A gift certificate to a special someone for regular delivery of seasonal arrangements from the local florist might be just the answer.   It’d be a gift that continues all year!

Values & Culture Fit by Todd Conkright

Have you ever hired someone who just didn’t fit with your organization? They had all of the right experience, but they never seemed to be on board with what you consider important, and were always the outsider. I’ve been on both sides of this scenario. As I hiring manager I have hired the resume, but overlooked the personality and values of the individual. What a big mistake! I have also been the one hired into a role that did not line up with my own values in a company culture that had me conflicted on a regular basis.

Can Little Modifications Make Big Changes in Your Career?

How is your thought life when it comes to getting to the next level in your career? For those who feel stuck, the old adage still applies: "If we always do what we've always done, we'll always get what we've always had!" So, try to make little changes daily. In addition to the following suggestions, what works for you?

Effective Business Communications: The Gentle Art of Schmoozing – i.e., Networking Skills

The networking discussed here has nothing to do with computers. Networking has to do with growing your group – i.e., “network” – of business associates, customers and friends. Using “schmooze” in connection with networking puts it squarely in the context of people and conversation, not computers. The word “schmooze” is derived from a Yiddish word that means to chat or converse. It’s a fun word that helps remind all of us that we should not take ourselves too seriously – especially when engaging in some friendly schmoozing.

Your Image Versus Technical Skills

Our appearance reveals a lot about our self-image.  To business prospects, a “pulled together,” polished appearance says that we are more responsible, organized and capable than those who are not.  If people see that we take pride in our appearance, they are more likely to assume that we ALSO take pride in “OUR” work and “THEIR” business as well.
